Tennis Antiques & Collectibles
n June of 1995 Christie's
London held its first ever tennis memorabilia auction. Among the full house
of bidders were tennis players Luke and Murphy Jensen, who bid unsuccessfully
for a lawn tennis boxed set which sold for $23,400. Tennis is rapidly becoming
the hottest sports collectible category. Compared to golf and baseball,
tennis memorabilia is underpriced and undervalued.
maryllis Press just published
a book entitled Tennis Antiques & Collectibles, the first guide to
collecting tennis memorabilia. More than 300 color photographs and illustrations
aid collectors, dealers, and tennis enthusiasts in identifying rackets,
presses, prints, fashions, and decorative objects. The appendices contain
a bibliography of 500 tennis books and racket tables for Wilson, Spalding,
and Wright & Ditson, in addition to a list of dealers who sell tennis
items. Tennis ball cans are pictured and dated.
eautifully photographed
by Jim Cherry, the author's son, Tennis Antiques & Collectibles
evokes the nostalgia of the feel of wood and soft green grass while giving
collectors and dealers valuable information about collecting tennis memorabilia.
